Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information 852 handles, why it handles it, and the choices available to you.
Last updated: September 1, 2026
Overview
852 is a weather, warning, and air-quality app for Hong Kong. This Privacy Policy applies to the 852 app and the 852 services operated by Just Because Labs LLC.
852 does not have user accounts, payments, or advertising trackers. 852 uses pseudonymous product analytics and crash diagnostics to understand service use and improve reliability. 852 does not sell personal information or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Information we handle
Contact messages. If you contact us, we receive and retain your message, your contact details, and our related correspondence for support, safety, and legal purposes. If you include the Device ID shown in Settings, 852 uses it to locate related service, analytics, and diagnostic records.
Local app choices. 852 stores your selected neighborhood and language preference on your device. These choices are used to show local weather and the app language.
Optional location. 852 requests exact device location only when you choose a location option. 852 converts that location to an 852 neighborhood on your device. If you enable current-neighborhood alerts, 852 stores the matched neighborhood ID and observation time on its server for local warning delivery. 852 does not send the exact coordinate to 852 servers or save it. Forecast requests may use public representative coordinates for the selected neighborhood, not your exact coordinate.
Ordinary request data. 852 servers automatically receive data needed to handle a request, such as your IP address, route, request time, and device or browser network metadata.
Installation data. 852 stores a pseudonymous installation Device ID derived from a random secret stored locally on your device. 852 servers do not store that secret.
Analytics and crash diagnostics. 852 uses the installation Device ID as PostHog's pseudonymous distinct ID and sends it with approved screen and product-action names, fixed categories describing the selected feature or result, and ordinary app and device metadata. These categories do not contain neighborhood identifiers, search text, forecast dates, warning contents, coordinates, or notification data. 852 also attaches the Device ID to Sentry crash diagnostics. 852 does not associate these tools with an account or direct identity unless you voluntarily provide your Device ID in a support message, and intentionally does not send touch capture, session replay, screenshots, or rendered text through them.
Push notifications. If you enable notifications, 852 stores your Expo push token, registration ID, platform, selected warning tiers, locale, and relevant timestamps so it can register and manage delivery.
Public weather data. 852 receives public weather and air-quality data from the Hong Kong Observatory and the Environmental Protection Department. Those organizations provide public data feeds. 852 does not send your personal information to those organizations.
How we use information
- Provide weather, official warning, and air-quality information for your selected neighborhood.
- Register and manage optional warning notifications.
- Maintain the service, protect it from misuse, and diagnose service failures.
- Respond to contact messages and requests.
- Meet legal obligations and enforce our terms.
852 uses pseudonymous product analytics to understand which parts of the app are used and whether key setup and feature flows succeed, and crash diagnostics to identify and fix failures. These tools are configured without touch capture, session replay, screenshots, rendered text, exact device coordinates, account details, or direct identity.
Disclosures and service providers
852 uses service providers to host the backend, deliver notifications, provide pseudonymous analytics, and provide crash diagnostics. Backend hosting is provided by Render in Singapore. Push delivery uses Expo Push Service and Apple or Google, depending on your device platform. Pseudonymous product analytics are provided by PostHog, a United States provider. Crash diagnostics are provided by Sentry, a United States provider.
852 may disclose information when required by law, to protect rights and safety, to investigate misuse, or as part of a business transfer. 852 does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Retention and deletion
852 keeps request logs, installation records, push registration records, and contact messages only for as long as reasonably needed for the purposes in this policy, including security, support, service operation, and legal obligations. Retention periods can differ by record type.
Your local neighborhood and language preference remain until you change them, clear the app data, or your operating system removes them. The installation secret is held in device secure storage and may persist after the app is removed and reinstalled on iOS. To ask 852 to delete server-held personal information, contact us at jbc@justbecauselabs.com. We will review the request, verify it where needed, and delete information that we do not need to keep for legal or security reasons.
Security
852 uses reasonable technical and organizational safeguards for the information it handles. No service or transmission is completely secure, so 852 cannot guarantee absolute security.
International transfers
852 is operated by Just Because Labs LLC, and its providers may process information in Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, or other locations where they operate. Those locations may have data-protection rules different from the rules where you live. 852 takes reasonable steps to protect information when it is transferred.
Your rights and choices
You may ask 852 for access to or correction of personal information we hold about you. You may also ask us to delete it, subject to legal and security limits. Contact us at jbc@justbecauselabs.com to make a request.
Location access, notification permission, and contact information are voluntary. Without location access, you can choose a neighborhood manually. Without notification permission, 852 cannot send warning notifications. You do not need to contact us to use the app.
Hong Kong users may have access and correction rights under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Contact us to exercise those rights or to ask about a complaint process.
Where the California Consumer Privacy Act applies, California residents may have rights to know, delete, correct, limit the use of sensitive personal information, opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and receive equal treatment for exercising those rights. This disclosure does not mean that the CCPA applies to 852. Contact us to make a request where the law gives you that right.
Children's privacy
852 is not intended for children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 provided personal information to 852, contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it.
Changes to this policy
852 may update this policy when its practices or legal obligations change. 852 will post the updated policy here and change the Last updated date. We will give additional notice or seek consent when the law requires it. Changes apply from the posted effective date.
